Motto: “m³ – People Make Menden: Vintage Meets Vision”

For the new Dorte-Hilleke Public Library in Menden, we had the opportunity to realize a truly special interior concept. The result is a space that goes far beyond traditional library design – featuring custom-made furniture and dedicated areas such as a reception desk, cloakroom, reading corners, bar area, children’s zone, bespoke solutions for library cards, and much more.

What makes this project unique is that the library was not simply newly built – it has grown organically. Together with the local community. Under the motto “m³ – People Make Menden: Vintage Meets Vision,” residents were actively involved in the process. Citizens of Menden were invited to donate well-preserved vintage furniture from their basements and attics – from sofas to floor lamps. These pieces have become part of the new library and, in combination with the newly crafted furniture by Koerling Interiors, create a distinctive, personal, and welcoming atmosphere.

The move from the historic Old Town Hall to a new location on Unnaer Straße was initially met with some criticism. However, due to heritage preservation restrictions, future-oriented development at the old site was not feasible. The result is all the more impressive: a modern space that successfully brings together past and future.
